We got some deep talk again…talking about the “P” word, as in “Priorities”. Do you realize that everyone has priorities? Gasp! I’m sure you already knew that. But think about it…priorities are what determines what we do in the 24 hours on any given day. We make the decision to make work one of our priorities, so we wake up, get dressed, and get in our cars to drive to work. We may make friends one of our priorities, and every weekend make an attempt to get together with someone close to share the events of the week. Most of us try to make family another one of our priorities and spend time sitting at the table listening to the latest politics discussed, or family drama gossiped, and all the while we’re daydreaming of what we’re going to do after dinner is done. I, for one, make it a priority to drink a cup of coffee every morning because I know that others around me will appreciate the tamed Victoria that one magical cup offers to my attitude! Come on, now…I’m not alone in that one I know!
What a great example! COFFEE!! Just like I need it every day…can you say mildly addicted (or not so mildly)…I determine certain things that I need EVERY…SINGLE…DAY! One priority I’m working on putting back on top is exercising! With all the changes going on lately between graduating college, starting a new job working night shift, being switched to day shift, planning a wedding and getting married, moving to New York…(phew. just got tired remembering all of that) my life was all the crazies and the priority to stay fit fell to the wayside. Bye-Bye fitness…wait, where’d you go? For a while I beat myself up for letting myself go, but let’s be honest, life is going to be crazy at times, schedules are going to change, and priorities tend to change with it. I accepted that fact and now, my friends, its time to move on and reset!
Old Victoria a few years ago would have felt guilty about not exercising because of a fear of loosing the way I looked. But new Victoria has had to learn that life has seasons, and some seasons are more focused on other areas and things going on. The important thing is to never be stagnant and feel like you’re stuck in someone you don’t want to be. That sounds confusing, but what I mean is, if you want to be someone who is healthy, strong, and confident (who wouldn’t want that!), then always look for ways to be that person!
So yes, now that life is slowing down for me, I’ve had time to reevaluate where I am and where I’m headed, and I realize that something that’s important to me is a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Achieving this is a priority for me because I know that these things make me a better person who is more able to achieve the things I’m called to do right now. For me, this looks like waking up an hour early to exercise, make a wholesome breakfast, and spending time reading the Bible with Paul. I know that the mornings are the best time for me to do these things because in the evenings after work and after cooking dinner I’m exhausted and just want to relax before bed.
Another priority for me during this season is being a supportive wife for my husband who spends most of his time studying and in school. The times that we’re able to be together may be spent with him looking at notes, but I’m just grateful to be near him! And I try to make his life at home as easy as possible with keeping a clean house, cooking wholesome dinners, and giving an encouraging word when he needs one.
I’m a firm believer that you can accomplish anything you want if you set your priorities and know what they are! All it takes is a little discipline, patience, and consistency. So think about it…what are your priorities? Where might your priorities need to change? Who do you see yourself as right now and who do you want to be in the future? I challenge you to take time to regroup and reevaluate like I did and, if needed, make some changes to your schedule to put those things that are most important to you back on top! Don’t let coffee be your only daily habit…there’s so many more important and better things in this life that are worth making your priority.
