You’re going to want to put this homemade Harissa sauce on EVERYTHING…literally EVERYTHING! This North African chili paste will light a smokey fire in your mouth!
I only just recently was introduced to Harissa. And literally, my world was changed!
It’s like the flavor-guru’s ketchup. I’m wanting this sauce dolloped on eggs, fish, in soups! It’s hard to even wrap my mind around, let alone explain, the richness of this flavor, but I’ll do my best.
I love the opportunity to take on making something homemade that I’ve previously bought at the store. I love making my own hummus and almond milk, I’ve made homemade ketchup before and spice blends. There’s something about just making an item from scratch. Oftentimes, if I really like a product like a condiment or salad dressing, you’ll find me jotting down the ingredients so I can recreate that item, myself, for the next time.
And that is how this Harissa recipe came about. Basically, it’s somewhat of a specialty item and can’t be found at every store, so I needed a way to be able to have it on hand when I needed it! That sounded a little aggressive…sorry, I just get so excited!
Don’t let homemade condiments scare you! It’s just a matter of throwing together a few ingredients and blending them all up in about 10 minutes, start to finish. And then, you too, can have Harissa at any time of the day, any time of the week!
To start, you’re going to need a few ingredients. You need 3 dried red chili peppers, tomato paste, 1 sweet red pepper, garlic, red pepper flakes, cumin, coriander, fennel seed, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and olive oil. To soften the chili peppers, simply soak in hot water for about 5 minutes. They don’t have to be completely soft, just mostly. Next you’ll want to broil the red pepper. Slice into four segments and place either in the oven on broil or, like I did, in a toaster oven (we’re already at the point in the seasons where it’s too hot to use the oven unless necessary!) Now to blend everything! Combine all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth and creamy with minimal chunks. Look at that beautiful color!
And, now you’re ready to top all of your favorite foods with your very own, homemade Harissa!
Homemade HarissaPrint Recipe
- 2 dry red chili peppers
- 1 sweet red pepper
- 3 Tbs tomato paste
- 5 cloves garlic, minced
- 5 Tbs olive oil
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp coriander
- 1 tsp fennel seed
- 2 tsp smoked paprika
- 2 tsp red pepper flakes
- salt and pepper to taste
Begin by soaking dried red chili peppers in hot water for 5 minutes.
Slice sweet red pepper in 4 segments and place in the oven or toaster oven to broil. Broil until they get some slight charring or wrinkling to the skin.
Combine soaked chili peppers, sweet red pepper, tomato paste, garlic, olive oil, and spices all in a high speed blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.
Serve with eggs, meats, in sandwiches, on burgers, or eat by the spoon (it's that good!).
